Course Description

аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Íø College of Dental Medicine – Arizona Faculty will provide a comprehensive refresher for dental hygienists and dentists who would like to refresh their chair-side pain control techniques.

You will receive a comprehensive review of the anatomical structures and navigational approaches necessary to troubleshoot potential injections problems.

Come away with new skills to utilize the Gow/Gates injection technique as an alternative to the traditional mandibular block injection. 

A total of three day in-person course consist of lecture and clinical laboratory, teaching concepts and clinical techniques for the administration of local anesthetic agents and nitrous oxide. Experience includes medical history review, electronic recordkeeping, patient management, and hands-on practice administering local anesthetics and nitrous oxide in a clinical setting. Class limited to 30 participants.

Full tuition refunds less $250 are issued if the participant notifies the Dental CE Office in writing (email is acceptable) of their cancellation 4 weeks in advance of first day of class. 

The аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Íø College of Dental Medicine-Arizona Continuing Dental Education (MWUCDM-AZ CDE) office reserves the right to end registration when the enrollment limit is reached and to cancel, modify or alter content, faculty or location for any course if circumstances indicate such a change is advisable. If the MWUCDM-AZ CDE finds it necessary to cancel a course, a full refund will be issued. No travel expenses will be refunded to the registrant in the event of course cancellation or cancellation of any registration.

Method

Hands-on clinical portion of the course will include a three (3) day (24 hour) local anesthesia and nitrous oxide analgesia clinic.  Hands-on instruction will include proper assembly and disassembly of anesthesia and nitrous oxide armamentarium and safe and proper administration techniques.

The following injections are reviewed and practiced:

  • Maxillary Injections: Anterior Superior Alveolar (ASA), Middle Superior Alveolar (MSA), Posterior Superior Alveolar (PSA), Nasopalatine (NP), Greater Palatine (GP), localized infiltrations
  • Mandibular Injections: Mental/Incisive (M/IN), Inferior Alveolar Nerve block, Long Buccal (LB)

All supplies, materials, and equipment are included in the course fee. Lunch will be provided.

Participants are grouped in pairs and will administer local anesthesia per the following sequence: maxillary infiltration and blocks followed by mandibular blocks. Participants will also administer nitrous oxide on each other.  

Saturday and Sunday:
Please Note: Participants unable to receive anesthesia and/or nitrous oxide for medical reasons will need to provide a substitute patient for the clinic sessions.

All participants are required to sign MWU CDMA “REQUEST AND CONSENT FOR LOCAL ANESTHESIA INJECTIONS AND NITRIOUS OXIDE ANALGESIA".

Course Objectives

At the completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  1. Provide a thorough review of head and neck anatomy,
  2. Demonstrate local anesthesia techniques,
  3. Administer nitrous oxide analgesia,
  4. Describe, identify, and treat medical emergencies associated with injections and nitrous oxide administration

All participants admitted to the Refresher: Local Anesthesia and Nitrous Oxide Analgesia for Licensed Dental Hygienists and Dentists Continuing Education Course must be able to meet all of the following requirements:

  • Participants must be able to apply didactic learning (theory) to clinical situations.
  • Participants must be able to hear and communicate effectively, follow directions, and act professionally in class. 
  • Participants must be able to read the printed words in textbooks and supplemental information, observe various dental instrument angulations and apply the concepts appropriately.
  • Participants' eyesight must be able to visualize fine detail (either naturally or corrected), have depth perception, and have the ability to visualize three-dimensional objects.
  • For everyone's safety, each participant must be physically free of the use of non-prescription drugs, illegal drugs, and alcohol.

Tatiyana Trowbridge, D.D.S. M.Ed. - MWU CDMA Associate Professor (ttrowb@midwestern.edu)

Dr. Tatiyana Trowbridge is an Associate Professor at аÄÃÅÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±Íø College of Dental Medicine-Arizona (MWU CDMA) and the Director to the Pre-Clinical Faculty.   She graduated from University of Washington School of Dentistry in 2001 and prior to joining the MWU CDMA faculty she owned and operated her private family dental practice in North Scottsdale.  Dr. Trowbridge also served as an adjunct faculty at Phoenix College Dental Hygiene and Dental assisting programs where she helped train future RDH's and DA's.
